ASRC Federal recently joined with five other member companies of the Wallops Contractors Association (WCA) at Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) to present $30,000 in scholarship donations to two higher education institutions on the Eastern Shore. Representatives from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and the Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) each received $15,000 to support science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students.

After an independent donation to the schools last year, ASRC Federal invited others within the contracting community at Wallops to partner in a successful effort to raise more funds for the 2021-2022 school year. ASRC Federal and partners at KBR, Peraton, SAIC, Jacobs and Axient made donations to help students needing tuition support and assist UMES and ESCC to outfit their laboratories with necessary equipment. UMES is one of 15 historically black institutions with Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology credentials and is the state of Maryland’s only university with an aviation program that includes pilot training. ESCC is a community college in Melfa, Virginia with trade and technology programs which help develop skills needed to support Wallops as a premier launch facility.

“WCA members are thrilled to provide this outreach to assist students in their education goals and support the next generation of space leaders,” says Jim Mason-Foley, ASRC Federal program manager and WCA president. “We also hope this helps build bridges for local students to work at Wallops and provides our current employees with advanced education that reinforces their opportunities for development with ASRC Federal at NASA.”

The WCA initiative will continue for the upcoming school year in hopes of raising even more. Mason-Foley, who has served as WCA president for the last 2 years after reinvigorating the program, adds that supporting the next generation of scientists and engineers is part of the WCA mission.
